Why Did I Switch TabletPC's?
The HP became a no-brainer. As people have noticed me with the new tablet, the usual questions have come up.
Why do I use it?
* the core apps of the Tablet operating environment help me stay organized. As a project manager, one of my few strengths is never forgetting anything. In reality, it is not that my memory is that great, it is just that I am always able to reach into my notebook and find whatever topic someone is trying to dig up. While it is true that I could work in Microsoft OneNote and Windows Journal (and/or other notebook apps) from a regular laptop, the fact is that when you have to work in a notebook app in a non-intuitive way (without being able to ink), it is not as effective. With inking also comes use of the Sticky Notes app, which adds on-the-fly note-taking ability.
* The schema of working in a notebook environment for me is more intuitive than solely working in Outlook PSTs and folders. It is how I organize things at home and how we all grew up organizing things in school. Carrying it forward into my work life just makes sense. I work this way both at work and at home.
* Inking is just faster and allows instant recording of data that remains persistent in a digital environment. Post-its get lost. Notes written in paper notebooks get forgotten. I can ink while I am on the phone. Sometimes I can type, too, but people sometimes get bothered when they hear you click-clacking away on a keyboard when you are supposed to be listening to them.
What should someone get if they are thinking about getting a TabletPC? What if it is their first Tablet?
In my current frame of mind, I would recommend going with a convertible. It is such a leap for the average computer user these days to leave the keyboard behind and go to a slate that I do not think it is a good challenge to present to someone when they are making their first foray into the TabeltPC environment. As you can see above, even I had difficulty making the transition, despite having used several TabletPCs and UMPCs.
