Computer geek's log. Stardate 090409, 0812.67. Wow. What a week. I've spent the week working predominantly from the Main Tower, supported by the Fujitsu U820, and of course, using my HP 2730p for work. And I guess I should throw in the MacBook Pro, as it is on travel with me for the weekend. If you've checked out the blog in the last few days you will notice that I've tried my hand at a couple of magazine-style posts to go along with all of the text and Flickr photo feeds. I've been using iWork '06, and specifically Pages for these articles, which I export to PDF format when complete.
Follow up:
Pages is a nice little app, even though I am using what must now be considered an antiquated version. The app does most of the work of making the page presentation look good, so that a writer can concentrate on just writing. I chose to export the content as PDFs to ensure that the formatting was preserved, but I owe it to myself to see what an HTML export looks like. It would be great if I could use Pages to generate web content for the main site that I could then incorporate into the Front Page shell.
I spent some time this AM trying to get my Google Contacts list into OS X Address Book. Although I set Preferences to sync with my Google account, I could not find a button to then manually initiate a sync, so I am not sure what kicks the process off after you have set Preferences. I waited a few minutes, got impatient (I have to continue looking at houses and cars this morning before the GF wakes up), and then just went to Google and exported my Contacts list as a vCard file. From there it was simple to import the master contact archive into Address Book from the .vcf file
I did not use the Fujitsu U820 for much. Mostly keeping up with the constant torrent of new tech information out on the interwebs. I have been updating my technology roadmap, reshuffling the order of priority of some pieces. While I pretty much moved most of my planned updates up into the earlier part of the year (replacement for the ultraportable, replacement for the work laptop, re-capitalization of a UMPC), there are still a few nick-knacks that I need to pick up,as long as I can keep the costs low. In search of...right now I am on the lookout for a cheap external flash for my Sony Alpha a350 dSLR, as well as some filters to get a little more variation in the styles of photos I can take. I am recording the draft notes for the roadmap in the Microsoft OneNote archive on the Fujitsu.
The instance of OneNote that is going to be getting the most work is on the HP 2730p. I started (finally) shopping for houses yesterday, as well as cars which need to follow shortly thereafter. I may be moving a fare ways away from work and I do not need to continue driving the Mustang through a 45 minute commute each day. The primary repository of all of my analysis and checklists for both major purchases will be in the HP. Once it becomes time, I also intend to take the HP with me to use in Tablet mode to record notes and take pictures with. I am using OneNote in combination with ScreenHunter. A lot of the sites that have house listings to make it easy to download photos, so I just use ScreenHunter to capture whatever I want from the webpage and paste it into OneNote.
